Papers, 1912-1965.

Papers of a writer and editor on social justice and labor, who was blacklisted for his refusal to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee in 1951. The collection best illustrates Stevenson's career as a writer and his interests in the American Southwest, the labor struggles of the New Mexican coal miners, culture and aesthetic theories, and the House Un-American Activities Committee. The largest portion of the collection consists of drafts of five volumes comprising "The Seed," which were "Morning Noon and Night," "Out of the Dust," "Old Father Antic," "The Hoax," and "The Sowing." Other major works documented in the collection are the novels "The Edge of the Nest," "The Gospel According to St. Luke's," and "The Pig-Iron Venus" (unpublished). There are also scripts and drafts from the plays "Counterattack" and "Declaration," both written in collaboration with Stevenson's wife, Janet Marshall Stevenson, and from the films "The Story of G.I. Joe" and "The Girl in White." A small administrative file of letters, subscriptions, and draft articles submitted for publication reflects Stevenson's work as co-founder and editor of the "California Quarterly." The processed portion is summarized above and is described in the register. Additional photographic accessions are described below.
